Birchbox vs. Ipsy October 2013
Hi there! I'm sorry for the few days without a post; I wasn't feeling very well, but I'm doing better now. Just some of the standard ups and downs involved with recovering from surgery, I guess. (Speaking of which: I want to point out that my husband took all the photos for this post! Using our light box for photos is kind of impossible for me right now because doing so requires sitting down on the floor, which I really can't do for several more weeks post-surgery. So he took the photos!)
Today I wanted to share with you my Ipsy bag and Birchbox for October, both of which arrived in the mail on the same day! I decided to re-subscribe to Birchbox this month because...well, because I'm weak and their points system is really great. LOL
First, here's what came in my Birchbox:
Pop Beauty Aqua Lacquer lip gloss
This is a nice enough lip gloss. I haven't tried it yet, but it's a little weird: I thought it would be a standard squeeze tube, but it actually has a weird little brush in the lid. Kind of strange, but I do like the color and I'm sure I'll get good use out of this.
Evologie Stay Clear Cream
This seems to be a facial moisturizer intended for use on breakout-prone skin, but I can't for the life of me figure out if it has an active ingredient like salicylic acid to help fight breakouts. The card that was included in my Birchbox says it contains "a patent-pending YS3 COMPLEX," whatever that means. Anyway, I have a few other face lotions to use before this one, but I'm sure I'll be able to use this and it will be fine for my oily skin.
Ruffian Nail Lacquer in Hedge Fund
I think we all know that I hate getting nail polishes in my beauty subscriptions. This is a greenish-grey shade that actually looks kind of interesting, but...argh. I might use this at some point, but I'm not thrilled to have it or anything.
Benefit Fake Up Concealer
This was the item I was most excited about...until I opened up the tube and realized there is MAYBE half an inch of product inside. I might be able to get two or three uses out of it, but...this sample size is ridiculous and exactly why people complain about Birchbox samples being too small. On the upside, it appears to be the right shade, and this IS a product I'd been wanting to try.
ChapStick Hydration Lock
This was a Birchbox Find, which - according to the card insert - is a "mass-market discovery [Birchbox] think[s] is just plain awesome." This came with a $1 off coupon that can be used on a future ChapStick purchase. Here again - another thing that's okay to have, but it doesn't really thrill me or anything.
And now, onto the Ipsy bag!
Okay, first of all: Can we talk about the bag itself? This thing is hideous and I hate it. I seriously loathe bags (or anything else, for that matter) decorated with little cutesy phrases like this. Yech. This will be on its way to Goodwill very soon.
LA Fresh Oil-Free Face Cleanser wipes
I've sampled these wipes before and they work just fine for removing face makeup, but they're not great for taking off eye makeup. They're just not saturated enough to take off mascara and eyeliner. Having said that, I will still get use out of these once I run out of my preferred Almay wipes.
Zoya Professional Nail Lacquer in Giovanna
Another nail polish, because apparently the universe hates me. I actually kind of like this color, though, and I did something very out of character for me and actually painted my nails with it. It took two coats to get full opacity. My husband says it reminds him of The Little Mermaid! LOL
Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volumizing Gel
And here we have the single worst product I got from either subscription service this month. Why on earth they would send this to someone with curly hair, I'll never know. And I don't even own a blow dryer, so I will get absolutely zero use out of this. To be perfectly honest, this product just totally pisses me off.
Buxom Full On Lip Polish in Dolly
This lip gloss is actually a really nice addition to this bag...or it would be, if I didn't own it already. Still, it's a very nice gloss and I'm happy to have a backup for when my current one runs out. And I'm always happy to see a brand like this in a monthly subscription. (By the way, the gloss came in this little foil pack, which is what's in the photo.)
Nourish Organic Deeply Nourishing Coconut & Argan Body Lotion
This is a nice little travel-sized bottle of body lotion. For some reason, I expected the lotion itself to be heavier, but it's actually kind of light and absorbs quickly. And, as my husband pointed out, it smells like a smoothie! This is a win.
So there you have it. I can't really pick a winner this month because there were hits and misses with both subscriptions. Overall, though, I'd say I prefer my Birchbox just because I'm so annoyed about the hair product in my Ipsy bag.
Ipsy and Birchbox both cost $10 a month. Birchbox has a great points system; you can earn 10 points for each product you review from the items you receive in your box each month. 100 Birchbox points = $10, which can be redeemed for full-sized products in the online Birchbox shop. If you're interested in subscribing to Birchbox, I hope you'll consider using my referral link.
For its part, Ipsy has just revamped its points system and you can now earn points for referrals and product reviews, but the system is a little underwhelming and needs some work. For more info on that, read this post about it. If you're considering subscribing to Ipsy, here's my referral link.
What did you get in your beauty subscriptions this month?
