Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer review

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share with you a review of one of the new drugstore products I picked up recently: the Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer in Apocaliptic.

I bought mine at Walgreens, where the standard price seems to be $4.99. I’m not sure if these are limited edition or not. They come in a range of 14 shades; I chose one of the brighter ones, but there are also more nude/neutral shades in the line. I checked the Rimmel website, and this product actually isn’t even listed on there (yet, anyway). Here’s what Drugstore.com has to say:

The earth-shattering lip lacquer from Rimmel London combining the intense color of lipstick with a lacquer-like shine, Show Off Lip Lacquer is an explosive makeup phenomenon that represents the end of color as you know it.  Packed with pure color pigments, its lusciously creamy, conditioning formula promises a never-before combination of color, shine and comfort that last and last.

From that (somewhat poorly written, ha) description, we can gather that these are supposed to be sort of a cross between a lipstick and a gloss. I’d describe it as a liquid version of a full-color lipstick—with TONS of pigment.

The tube is made of a hard plastic with a funky, sort of jewel-cut top that unscrews to pull out the doe-foot applicator. The applicator itself is actually kind of unique; it contains a little well to help it pick up more product at a time so you don’t have to keep dipping back into the tube.

This product is sort of sloppy going on. The liquid consistency and intense pigment combine to make it kind of difficult to apply completely perfectly. I put mine on and then need to go back around the edge of my lipline with a Q-tip soaked in makeup remover to clean up the edges.

I will say that this product wears well. I was afraid it might move around, but once it sets (which took maybe 10 or 15 minutes) it doesn’t move. Don’t get me wrong; it doesn’t dry out right away, just sets to a finish that keeps it from migrating.

It’s pretty comfortable for about three hours; after that I want to apply a lip balm or something on top to add a little moisture (although for the photos below I refrained from doing that so I could take an authentic picture of how it wore!).

The first photo below was taken immediately after application; the second was taken after about five hours (during which, it should be noted, I ate dinner!). I also want to point out that I applied a nude lipliner underneath the Rimmel lip color.

The “after” photo was taken after five hours of wear, but I actually wore this for about seven hours and finally had to take it off before bed because it was still going strong!

Overall, I’m a huge fan of these and would love to pick up some more colors! My local Walgreens is having a buy-one-get-one-half-off sale on these this week, so if you’re interested this might be a good time to check them out!

I hope this was a helpful review! Have you tried these Rimmel Lip Lacquers? Thinking about it? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Like I said on facebook, I love the color. I have to admit, though, that I love it more after 5 hours than at initial application. I think it's a really nice color on you and I am thinking I might pick one of these up on my next drug store trip. Thanks for the review.

    1. I agree! The color is a bit much right after I apply it, but it looks great as it wears and fades a bit. I'd highly recommend these, especially for the price! Next time I'd like to try one of the tamer colors to see how those compare to Apocaliptic.
